Where is the snow?

It's December, right? I live in the north of Scotland, latitude 57 degrees 6 minutes N, to be precise. For my geographically challenged readers (and those with a North American perspective), that's almost as far north as Juneau, Alaska.

WHERE IS THE SNOW!

We went for a walk yesterday in the woods by Crathes Castle and I didn't see a single flake.

I have been checking my friends' blogs. They all live further south than me. I see lovely Stella joyfully rolling around in the soft white stuff. The land around the Rocky Creek Scotties' residence is looking stunning, like a scene on a Christmas card. Hoover now blends in beautifully with his background. Jake and Fergi have decided that the best response to a blizzard is to loll around indoors all day in their jimjams.

What do we get here in Aberdeen?  Rain, rain and more rain.  It's just not right is it?

I gather that there is a big meeting in Copenhagen this week. Gail explained it all to me. I think I understand. A lot of hot air will be generated, then Barack Obama is going to fly in at the end and fix it so we get snow in Scotland next year. Something like that.

Do you think he'll succeed?

Oh. Gail has put on her scientist hat (metaphorically) and is telling me I'm over-simplifying again.....she's blethering on about the Gulf Stream, and how this young laddie Obama isn't personally responsible for the Scottish climate....

PS from Gail - it seems that on some computers, part of this post appears in Greek, but on other computers, including mine, it all looks normal. There is NOT supposed to be any Greek! (Hamish is not THAT clever!) I am investigating. Has anyone else come across this before?

We're glad Obama let us have some snow - you'd think all of that hot air would blow down from Washington and melt all of the snow here in VA. Maybe Congress was in closed session this weekend??

Anyway we hope you get some snow soon, but we hope your new overcoat gets there before the snow. We want to keep you warm.

Hamish, we are the same - rain, rain and more rain.
Our walks are so muddy that Bailey keeps sinking - her legs are particularly short!
We would welcome crisp fresh snow to walk in.
Also instead of coming back covered in mud we would be snow white!
We confess we dont understand climate change but will read your post again and see if we can work it out.
Tell Gail it could never be overly simplified for us.
Do you think it would help if a gathering of us dogs with blogs went to Copenhagen?
love and kisses

Hey there, Hamish!

Okay, here's our really random response...

Have you thought of the potential green house effect that you produce every time you visit that tree by the stream?...Gee, we even feel it here!

We have also heard, via the bush telegragh, that "HAMISH IS A GLOBAL WARMER!"...YEAH! your positive, warm energy dissipates around the globe!

...and about the snow... I really prefer you in an environment WITHOUT snow!...that way we get to see you! (Why are you trying to hide anyway?)

Man, we love you!

I totally get it, being a snow lover myself. The white stuff is so much fun to romp around in. Maybe there is a silver lining, though. Since snowy weather's so cold (and since mud packs tend to be healing), maybe it's easier on your paws and bones this way. I know. That's not a very good defense. But I tried.

Cozy and warm inside. It's -18°C here this morning.

Cheers
Fergi (and Jake - he's sleeping)

Wilf and Digby are of the mind that there is nowhere as beautiful as Scotland - however the beauty comes with one major drawback - constant rain. When they lived a little south of you in Angus the two of them were constantly soaked to the skin. You're right though the weather has changed - the heavy snowfalls of my childhood have disappeared even in the Cairngorms.

Do you mean that you have always had lots of rain and no snow? You can't blame that on Global Warming, can you? You need to find a colder climate to live in, like move to Minniesnowda, USA, where I live. We get about five to six months of the cold, snowy stuff and the rest in nice, summery weather. You would like it I bet. (and I would like having you here!)

Kisses,
Stella

Hamish, Dear Lad,

Why we know the Gulf Stream. It often flows right by us. Would you like us to introduce you?????

Alternatively, if it snows when we get to Northland next week, we'll package some up for you. How cool if we could deliver it in pawson!!!

Be of good cheer -- perhaps something will move forward in Copenhagen after all.

Wirey woofs,

What is this snow of which you speak? I have never seen snow. But I am young yet and still have alot to do in my life. I am putting snow on the list now since it seems to be rare. She says it's like going to the gulf beach, but very cold. I like cold, it makes me go zoom zoomie around. I hope you get your snow soon. Maybe all those politicians meeting near you are making the hot air rise. If they'd stop jet setting around in their private planes, polluting the air and using up energy, they'd probably do more for the environment than any silly meeting. Haven't they heard of teleconferencing?

When it rains, we westies get dirty in the mud so you know what that means, a bath ! Not really my favourite experience, but when it snows make sure you put your coat on so your Mum can see you !

Hamish, what a clever bug! Greek! I'll bet you're sneaking in and using the computer when Gail isn't there aren't you! I vote for putting you in charge of climate change conferences, by teleconference of course. You certainly couldn't be any worse than the leaders we have here in Canada. Because seriously, I'm not a fan of the results of global warming where I live. You should put your mind to it. I just can't cope. The piles and piles of snow and piles of snow, day after day. It's been just too much. A little snow is fun, granted, what with all the sniffing and rolling and racing about, but then there's the months of ice and salt and salt and ice on the sidewalks, which hurts my feet. Last year I could see over the back fence by February and I'm just a wee dog, as you know. Not a fan, I say.

It doesn't quite seem like Christmas without snow, does it? Hopefully that changes soon and you will have lots of snow to play in!

Hamish, maybe you're barking up the wrong knee. Instead of telling Gail you need a new coat, write a letter to Santa Claus!
