The saddest news

Gail here.

There is no good way of saying this. I'll tell it straight.

Late Wednesday afternoon (only a few minutes after I pressed the 'publish' button on the blog post) Hamish fell into a fit. A couple of hours later, he seemed to have stabilised, but then at about eight thirty came another seizure, and after that he went into a downward spiral of convulsion after convulsion interspersed with a sort of unhinged frantic pacing in circles around the room. After several calls to the emergency vet, at three o'clock in the morning I drove him the short distance to the veterinary surgery and made perhaps to the hardest decision of my life, to sign the consent form for 'humane euthanasia'.

He was such a grand little dog. He brightened my life for over a decade. I can't quite accept yet that he really is gone, the end came so suddenly. I keep hearing noises in the house and thinking 'what's he up to', and I find I don't know what to do with the time when I should be taking him for walk.

This photo below is last one I took of Hamish, crossing the road on his way back home after his final stroll.

We were both so, so sorry to hear the sad news about Hamish. He was such a handsome wee fellow and came across as having all those feisty, independent, tenacious, loving traits that made him a real family member. The last photo of him head held high, purposefully crossing the road in Aberdeen just brings out what a character he was. After 14 years it must be a huge loss to the family. I can only say he alawys brought a smile to our faces.

Dear Gail...I've never commented on your blog. I found you only just recently but I wanted to tell you I am so very very sorry to read about Hamish. Oh my what a sad sad day.
You two added so much to each other's life. Several days after the we had to make a similar decision about our first cat...I would hear what sounded like him digging in his litter box, once I heard crunching from the direction of his dish...of course there was no kitty there and no food but I heard these things. I truly believe he was saying hi Mom thanks for loving me all the way to the end...I am fine. Hopefully Hamish and Milky-way are playing at the Rainbow Bridge.

The greatest shortcoming--probably the only one is their short lives. Our family has three dogs. The oldest is almost 13 and we are dreading the day he will pass. But we know we are making them happy. Hamish was a very luck dog. So loved. And I'm sure he he knew that.

Dear Gail, I am so sorry I could find no words earlier - I still can't. It was such a shock and daft though it seems when we have never met I had grown to love wee Hamish.
You told his life so very well and we felt we got to know this little independent minded dog.
Even with 'his' comments that little personality shown through. I remember when he commented on the lovely dresses Asta designed I was saying to my husband what a right wee Aberdonian Hamish was!
We put together a little goodbye post which I cried through.
I so wish the end hadn't come so suddenly but perhaps there is never a good time or a good way to say goodbye.
Take care

I really don't know what to say about the loss of my distant cousin Hamish. Even though we didn't get the chance to meet in this life, you can bet our paths will cross. Eventually.

I must have known before She shared the news with me this morning. I've been out of sorts all week. And while We were out a moment ago, I just didn't feel like walking.

Now I know why.

We dogs have a connection that people don't understand. It's strong and wonderful.

She's just crying and crying and crying. And remembering when They had to make the same decision after Their BoBo experienced months and months of terrible seizures. He left this world at 16.

Now, He and Hamish are causing all sorts of mischief together. Rootin' in holes, diggin' in gardens, watching and watching whatever's out there.

You can be sure of that!

You're to be commended for making the self-less decision to help your Hamish experience a dignified and painless departure. And I know he appreciates all the love you gave him for all those years. So when you hear him rattle about in the house, he's there. You just don't see him.

Ms. Gail,
We heard the dreadful news of Hamish's passing to The Rainbow Bridge at Max Dog's blog. It makes no mind that we didn't know Hamish well; we, like the entire DWB community, were aware of his beloved stature. He is a most beloved companion and we are sure he will be terribly missed. We have had family members leave us with advanced notice (Chance, Old Bear Dog, Kodi, & Penny) and we have have had the unexpected departures, when we could say goodbye (Gordon) and when we could not (Rusty). None of them are any easier than the other. It was an unselfish thing that you did. You have our prayers and thoughts on this sad dad. Hamish will always be in your heart and the scar of his departure will be with you forever even when the pain eases.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this – the last battle – can’t be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don’t let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn’t want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they’ll tend,
Only, stay with me ‘til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its’ last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don’t grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close – we two – these years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

Oh, I am so very sorry about the loss of your dear, Hamish. What a grand dog he was-and such a handsome chap in his red coat!
I truly believe he's running happy and free even as I write this.
My thoughts are with you.

I found your blogsite on a friend's blog. I thought I would write to you to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. My friend posted photos of Hamish.
I hope you find some tiny comfort in this...
I used to love dogs. Always wanted to get one again. But recently was badly attacked by a dog. Around my city I can't even get myself to look at a dog again. Until I saw Hamish's photos on DSS's blog. You see, from the day I was born I had a Westie that looked just like Hamish for 16 years. He was the world to me growing up. Hamish and Maxie look so alike! Your blog on him has reminded me of the love I used to have for dogs and how wonderful most are. I know your's was most special and I am so sorry for your loss. That last photo of him is so precious.
Take care...

I am a friend of Max Dog and Toffee, and I heard this sad news about your little Hamish.
I am so sorry your heart is breaking because of what you have had to endure in loosing Hamish. Your heart must be tramitized. You did for Tamish the best gift for him to be free.
You are very unselfish.
I will light a candle for Hamish and will keep you in my thoughts that your heart will heal.

We read about Hamish from Rocky Creek Scotties and Java. We are sorry that Hamish has gone to the rainbow bridge even before we got to know him. We have seen his name being mentioned in some other blogs but never got to visit him and now he is gone. He will be in our thoughts...

We just met you while following Max's World Tour, and planned to come and visit more often, then read this tonight on Max's blog.

OC and the Corgi Country Crew

Gail, I am so very sorry to hear this news as I know that your heart is aching at the loss of your dear Hamish. This is exactly what happened a couple of years ago with OC's dad, Buddy. He was fine and out doing squirrel patrol one night and I woke up to find him having a seizure beside the bed early the next morning. He was about 12 years old. We rushed him to the vet (over an hour away) and he had more on the way. We, too, had to make that last decision of Love that morning.

Sometimes I wonder if it is better when it is fast like that. OC (11 but injured several years back by a goat) is having a lot of trouble with her hips and can't walk at times. She is on pain meds and doing well most of the time because of that, but I dread having to send her to the Rainbow Bridge... I've been there way to many times in my life, and my heart and prayers are with you in this difficult time. Linda (OC's Mom)

Dear Gail

I am so, so sorry to hear the sad news of Hamish. You must be devastated.

I’m a Westie-loving expat and first discovered Hamish’s blog through The Guardian online some months ago and was hooked. Yours is the only blog I have ever read, let alone signed into.

I loved your tales of Hamish – you write so well – but I hadn’t realised just how much I had taken him to my heart until I heard your dreadful news. This has been tearful weekend.

Take time to grieve, but I hope that re-reading your blog will bring back many happy memories and ease your sorrow. Your stories serve as a wonderful tribute to the great times you had with your dear little dog. What more could he have asked for?

With very best wishes
Becky Morris

Dearest Gail

I don't have your email address (somehow it's got mislaid), so if you get a mo', please drop me a line at maxdoggie@mweb.co.za.

My dear friend, I hope that you have had a gentle day. I've been thinking of your loss constantly as well as your comment about contemplating the direction of Hamish's blog.

I have a small suggestion, which perhaps you can add to your considerations....

I was on our own walk tonight, thinking of you and Hamish...How about starting an 'interim blog', in honor of Hamish, where you can be free to experiment? I am sure that I don't only speak for myself, but we will be immediate followers - to help you through this transition!

You could consider calling it after something that symbolizes Hamish - such as:
"The little Red Coat" or "Scottish Hillsides" or something like that. If it works for you, you can continue on that theme, otherwise you can create something totally new.

It's just a thought...I know things are tough, but we would hate to lose you. We love you and are holding you tightly in our hearts.

Hi Gail, just to let you know that I have been thinking of you today.
We went to Strathclyde Park and had a long walk. I actually had tears in my eyes when we met a Westie in a wee coat.
It is such a devastating bereavement to lose a pet but I do believe there is comfort in your loss being understood.
That is the best part of the DWB community - we really don't need to explain it to each other cos we know.
Right now you need the time to grieve for Hamish but I was reading Caryl's comment and thinking she must read my thoughts!
We don't want to lose you - stay close. If you feel like blogging blog if you don't that's OK.
Our email is on the blog - marthabasset@googlemail.com if you do want to get in touch.
I sadly, probably cos I am so old, have lost a few dogs and each one has devastated me.
Each time I have said I cannot ever go through that again and vowed never to have another dog.
I am so glad you are not saying that - I know in time it will be the very best tribute to our wee Hamish.
Take care of yourself, the only advice I can give is do whatever feels right for you. Cry, walk, laugh whatever.
love

So, So saddened to hear the news about Hamish. But, I know he is now at the Rainbow Bridge with my Westie Merlin that passed just about 5 years ago. I just 2 months ago welcomed a new dog into my life, but it took a long time. Time does heal the whole left in your heart by the loss of their companionship. But, you NEVER lose their love or the memories. They are always with you, just not in form. Be gentle on yourself and allow the time for grief. I know the Scottish are good at "Stiff Upper Lip" but love is love and grief feels the same whether you lose someone with skin or fur. I hope in time you will find a place for a new adopted fuzz face in your life and you will write about their exploits. So many dogs need homes. Hamish's coat inspired me to buy the same one for my new family member Douglas Fur. Now, when it rains here and he wears it it will give me a moment to send some light to you and to Hamish wherever his Spirit may be romping. Peace and Blessings, Lisa and Douglas Fur

Gail. We have been thinking of you almost non-stop, and mentioning you often. You and Hamish have etched out a very special places in the hearts of so many families. Your relationship and the way you expressed and shared it has been a joy in our days. We so hope that you are finding some strength - that that you already owned and called your own, and that that your blogging family is sending your way. We so hope that each day become just a tiny bit easier - even if it's not a measurable difference for a long time. And we selfishly hope that you stick around and somehow, in whatever way and at whatever time it feels right for you, continue blogging. Hamish will be missed dearly, and remembered well. We don't want to miss you, as well.

Take time for yourself, and know you are not alone in the healing process.

I found your blog while researching my dear old westies latest health complaints. Kiri, is 14, and is showing the same signs of ageing as your lovely Hamish.

I know one day soon we will have to make the same horrible decision, but I just wanted to thank you for writing this blog. Despite it making me bawl my eyes out, it is comforting to know that someone else knows how I'm feeling.
