Male grooming

Perhaps readers could help settle a little dispute we have in this household regarding a suitable grooming regime for the older male (dog) who still wants to impress the ladies.

Me, I favour the rugged approach. Think 'Real Dog'. Untrimmed coat, a little tousled. Mud on the paws and belly. A rich, pungent perfume signifying a close relationship with nature, acquired, perhaps, by a satisfying roll in 'material' left behind by a fox.

Gail seems to think otherwise. Visits to the hairdresser are deemed appropriate. Scissors, showers and shampoo are all involved. I've even recently been threatened with a toothbrush (heaven forbid!) And there seems to be an objection to me riding in the Mini if I'm smelling a certain way.......

Your views, please.

Being young ladies we can confirm that we prefer the more rugged male with a good doggy smell about him.
Our mum tells us that Harry, our predecessor, refused all attempts at making him smell more acceptable to humans. He was much admired by lady dogs!
Sometimes humans just dont get it!!!

We would tend to agree with our wise Aunties....infact, before her date with Petey the other day, Rosie applied a generous dollop of "material" thoughtfully left by a deer....it's her favourite scent....Gabbi prefers parfum de fox!
Us ladies....and I use the term loosely....tend to also favour the tousled look, especially in you Terrier men :o)
Hope that helps....can't wait until Saturday! (Mum is going to email your Mum later on)

I prefer the less manicured dog myself. After and hour of trying to de-shed me, I think I much prefer the natural look to the coat just falling out in clumps!

Hi Hamish,

It's a Catch-22. When I'm all scruffy and stinky and a tad homeless looking, I get a lot more sniffs and have a lot more hair to capture those essences of "pee on lamppost," "something dropped on the sidewalk" and the classic "Eww, what is that?"

However, once I've had a bath or been stripped at the groomers (at least they don't yank your hair out!) I get a lot more attention from the 2-leggeds—pats and cuddles and treats and "oh what a cute doggie!" Plus I can sleep anywhere I want—nothing is off-limits.

I guess the best is a couple days after the hairdresser, when I've successfully rubbed off that awful flowery stink, but I still look good enough to get an extra cookie!

Petey

For me, its the rugged outdoor smell I like. I don't even like to have my coat brushed, but Mom insists on it. When I came here it was October so when we get summer there will be lots to roll in and I can't wait!

Kisses,
Stella

I is not a lady. But I prefer the natural smell. Living by a beach dead fish is about the best I get to roll in.
Mum seem to think it important for me to get brushed and stuff.

Ciao bello Hamish!

Sheesh, we're earth dogs! Isn't smelling earthy a breed standard for all terriers ...???? Why would our hoomans want us to smell like un grande mucchio di fiori??? I just don't get that...!

Tanti baci!
Lucia

PeeEss: Forgive my bad manners! It's very nice to meet you, Hamish. Congratulazioni on your role in Beagadoon!

Hamish,

You're permitted to give my lovely Rosie Posie a slobber for me. I'm so jealous you get to play with the Dughallmor beagles. Show them just how wonderful us terrier boys can be!

Your pal,
