Anyone who read the comments to my 'Male Grooming' post a couple of weeks ago will have seen that my canine blogging pals were one hundred percent in line with my thinking on this vexed issue, preferring the rugged natural appearance.
Well, Gail (characteristically) decided to ignore the good advice of others, so last week I was subjected to what folks in these parts refer to as the 'Spring Trim', no matter that a few miles inland, it was snowing at the time. Brrrr and double brrrr.
In response to this cruel treatment, humans without exception look at me, smile fondly and exclaim "Ah, doesn't he look sweet, just like a toy!"
Let's be quite clear about this. Being compared to a toy is not in my book a compliment. It's wrong and hurtful on so many levels. Am I some dumb and inanimate object? A mere plaything? A Christmas present for a baby? How belittling.
So I'm not going to post the photo Gail took today. It would only encourage her think I'm proud of the new 'hairdo'. Which I'm not. In case you hadn't already realised.....
Och Hamish, there is nowt as queer as folk!
Your coat will grow back so dont worry.
There are problems in being adorable - sometimes you arent taken seriously.
Anyone who has been following your blog would realise that you are a very serious Westie. We can all see you read very serious literature and know your own mind. Indeed even today on our blog you commented about 'negative connotations' and we thought that Hamish is indeed an erudite dog!!!
Hamish rest assured we bassets love you for your mind!!

We just popped back to see who our comment said we were - we signed into Martha's email at googlemail and didnt realise we were or could post with that!
At least it says Martha! Just think your coat will have grown even in that short time!!!

I'd figured it was you! And thank you, for your comment, thoughtful as ever. 'Erudite'. Yes I like that description. So much better than 'toy'. I feel that you and I are kindred spirits.
All the best, H.
Not a toy, a terrier is many things but NEVER a toy! I would be upset over that too, and if someone ever shaved my coat, I would be quite upset too! Humans think they are so smart, but really, we need to train them about what is best for us!

Pee Ess, We think you a still quite the handsome Dandy!
Hamish you can't fight it, you're a delight to look at! All you need to do is remind those who compliment your good looks that you have a brain behind that adorable face! I sure hope you know that I fell for your intellect first...but your good looks were an added bonus!
Oh no Hamish. I sure is glad I doesn't get hair cuts. Although I does have to have lots of brushings. I thinks you should go on strike till it grows back!
peeess, you pawed to me that your date at the rainbow room was a bit much for you, well I knows of a nice slightly older Lady looking for a fella. I said I would introduce you. http://lookinfurlovewithscooby.blogspot.com/2009/03/suzuki.html
I feel your pain, Hamish.
At least once a day, I get called a Westie. Nothing wrong with that, except Westies are West Highland WHITE terriers and I am a creamy shade of beige (somone once referred to my color as "champagne!") with gray ears! Do they think I'm a dirty Westie?
Funny, though, the comely Baby Rocket kept referring to you as "adorable" on Saturday night and you didn't seem to mind it then...bet you wouldn't mind being a toy in her play pen, now would you? Have you kept up your correspondence? She seemed quite keen on you.
Back to being my scruffy self (at least you don't have to get stripped!).
Good for you Hamish, we like a man who stands by his beliefs....and as you know, we're with you....tousled and unkempt is best....especially when you practically live at the North Pole!
The last time the V-E-T paid us a house call, he thought I was a huge toy stuffie, perched on top of the hill ...
The V-E-T, of all people, mistook this TOP DOG as a toy ... just because I have the uncanny ability to sit and watch without the slightest twitch.
And no, the Chief doesn't believe in much grooming - apart from the cursory, shampooing showers, nail clippings and ear cleaning ...
